Hi , If you are planning to buy a laptop, but looks costly so want to know how about purchasing a second hand or used laptop ! Then you are in right place.
Most of the time you will get used laptop with good price and good condition, provided if you do proper research and apply it before buying the second hand laptop.
CHECKLIST BEFORE BUYING USED LAPTOP:
Here are some of the few things to check when purchasing a used laptop
1. Take somebody:
In my point of view, it is mandatory to bring you someone (prefers who knows well about laptop) when plan to visit and buy from second hand shop or seller.
The main purpose is it makes you feel comfort, confidence and boldness.
2. Take necessary things:
- Pen drive
- Headphones
- CD/DVD (High quality video, some software- detailed later)
- Mobile (WiFi, hot-spot-detailed later)
- Ethernet cable.
3. Examine the look of laptop:
For any product just by looking and good observation, you will get to know how much the product the product is used. Some 2 year old laptop looks good when compared to 1 year old laptop.
Outlook seeing means not just looking, but it also includes keen observation. Look all the surfaces (above, bottom, sides, near the laptop folding areas) and check for scratches, dent.
It is advisable to take at-least 2-4 minutes for this checklist alone.
Testing the outlook and hardware:
Once if you done with your outlook observation, it necessary to check the following:
Time to note how long the laptop takes to get in after the power on switch is hit- Ideal time is 20 seconds to 40 seconds- taking long time indicate there must a rough usage of laptop which results laptop will not have good lifetime.
4. Ports:
Checking for all the ports (Think the ports that are available are enough for your needs and placed according to your needs).
Take available things to check for the following:
- Audio jack-headset
- USB- charging point (Type-c/Micro-usb)
- Ethernet- RJ 45(Internet connection)
- HDMI- connect to TV or other video devices.
- VGA- Display purpose (Connect to monitor)
- SD CARD READER- Camera videos and picture transfer
5. Specifications of laptop verification:-

6.Battery:
It is very important to check for battery quality and its working condition. when you start to examine the laptop, connect the laptop with charger and have an eye on how good the charging percentage with stipulated time and also how much the heat generated.
7. Screen and display:
Take few seconds to look for screen scratch or minute broken display. You can check with changing the complete background display color to black or white which will help you to identify the scratches easily.

8. Games:
If you a heavy game player, it is always better to carry the games which you usually play and play it on the laptop arrest for 10 minute to check for any lagging, slowness or error in opening the games.
9. Sound:
Always different types of songs to test it through head phone and through speaks in the laptop and check for it's working condition and good sound quality experience.
10. Wi-Fi and Hot-spot:
You connect it with your mobile to check for Wi-Fi tethering,USB tethering, mobile hot-spot connection and Ethernet connectivity. So carry your mobile.
11. Heat generation :
One more important point is to pay attention now and then, how much heat produced after the minimal working and heavy working like games. The general thumb rule is more the heat generates, the bad the quality of overall working condition of laptop.
12. Documents:
It is always check the serial numbers placed on the laptop, power adapter, and cross verify the same with purchase bill/invoice or check it with online portal of the specific brand of the laptop.
13. Payment
It is always better pay it through online mode, which itself will give the evidence of buying and also the corresponding member detail proof.
14. Deal:
If u find any defect in any of the above heads, it is always better to avoid the deal and come out. This is my personal opinion. If you are not satisfied then don't buy.
15. Deals without laptop bag/ accessories:
If the seller doesn't have laptop bag, you can hassle the price to get extra benefit.
Total time to complete the check list:
In my opinion the ideal time to check all these qualities when buying the second hand or used laptop would be around 30-40 minutes. If the seller is hurry when you examine the laptop, maybe he is trying to hide something and be careful with those sellers. If the seller or shop is very hurry, just walk away and don't make any deal.
